Lesson 2

Goal: Have a discussion with students about where our food comes from and the benefits of buying food locally. Bring in veggies from Maine for students to eat and observe, initiating a discussion about what vegetables are grown in Maine and where they are grown. Using vegetables grown in Maine (potatoes, corn, and carrots) lead a veggie printing art project. Introduce students to printmaking artist Jen Hewett, who uses shapes and color to create beautiful and fun artwork.

Questions:  How far does it take for our food to get to us?

Where does our food come from?

How does agriculture contribute to climate change?

Art Project: Make individual prints using "nature's stamps;" potatoes, carrots, and corn that shapes have been cut into. Have students collaborate by printing on two canvases.
